Success Story: Helping member understand the connection between mental and physical health results in positive outcome

Edward* is an elderly Passport member who was in recovery for substance abuse disorder and had been recently diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). In 2014 he had a stroke and then in 2015 had a stroke and a heart attack. He smoked 3-4 cigarettes daily. He lacked the knowledge of how COPD would affect his overall health.

Passport Health Educator LeNita Bella discussed how smoking affects his health and sent him smoking cessation resources. She also talked with Edward about his recovery and alternative ways to manage stress. As a result, he has started efforts to quit smoking and is continuing to do well in his recovery.

“Working with this member and seeing how he did not let his health deter him from his goals was a positive thing,” says LeNita. “With a little encouragement and resources, it shows you can do anything you put your mind to!”
